Checklist for Trouble Shooting Installation and Errors

It is important to review all information contained within this Checklist as many Errors can originate from multiple areas & Full Admin Rights are required when installing software. 


Please verify your Computer meets Software System Requirements:

NOTE: If you are currently able to open Software, we strongly recommend to create back up file of your software database & save to USB Flash drive prior to trouble shooting any errors you may be experiencing.

Checklist for Trouble Shooting:

  • Try Running the software as Administrator:

1) Right click the software icon on computer desktop

2) Select Run as Administrator and select "YES" if you receive a UAC (User Account Control) message

  • Try uninstalling Software if installed & re-install the software as Administrator:

1) Right click the TaxRight20XXSetup or LSLink20XXSetup or ACA20XXSetup file.

2) Select Run as Administrator and select "YES" if you receive a UAC (User Account Control) message.

NOTE: Full Admin Rights is required to install software or you may experience an Access Denied, Error Message or UAC (User Account Control) Request to enter Credentials (Username/Password). If you are prompted to enter a password when attempting to install software or do not have Full Admin Rights, then please contact your IT Administrator and/or IT Department.

NOTE: We want to re-emphasis that software install MUST be performed by System Windows User Account with Full Admin Rights.

  • If the Software Detects that .NET Framework version 4.6.1. is not installed: See Support Article > Download-and-Install-NET-Framework-4-6-1-Error
  • Software can only be installed on your local computers hard drive as a Local User (not compatible network drives, servers, cloud or virtual machines). 

NOTE: The software by default saves all needed files to the specific directory located on computer systems local (C) drive. Moving to other locations can create software function instability as it is not designed to share or access data across systems or multiple drives. 

  • Software can only be installed on Windows 10 or 11 PC (not compatible with MAC, MAC parallels systems running Windows, Linux or Server Systems).
    (As of May 1, 2020 due to security reasons we will no longer support Windows 7, 8, 8.1)
  • If the Software Installation Wizard Freezes During the software setup - Please Re-Boot the computer once and retry the software installation by right clicking the TaxRight20XXSetup or LSLink20XXSetup or ACA20XXSetup file and selecting "Run as Administrator", and select "yes" if you receive "do you want to allow this app to make changes" .
  • If you are getting a database error "file is not a database" - This happens when you use the (BAK) back up file from the prior year software to import your data into the current year software. You must have the prior year software fully installed if you are importing your data into current year software. See Support Article > How-to-Import-Prior-Year-Data

Turn off (UAC) User Account Control Settings by following below steps: 

1) Click on Windows Start button (Windows 10 & 11) 

2) Type Control Panel in search field & proceed to open Control Panel 

3) Click on User Accounts

4) Click on "Change User Account Control Settings" & set to Never notify 

5) You will need to reboot your computer after you change the settings

  • Team Viewer/Services:
  1. Turn off Team Viewer if it is running
  2.  Click Windows start button, then type services.msc and open services app to look through and turn off any anti-virus services that are running in the background.

  • Make sure your Windows is up-to-date: 

In Windows 10 right click the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & Security  > Windows Update. 

In Windows 11 right click the Start button  > Settings  > Windows Update. 

  • Temporarily disable your Anti-Virus Software/Firewall:

If you're not able to install updates or cannot connect to E-File website & E-File your Forms, then your anti-virus software or firewall that you are running may be blocking software program. 

It may be necessary for you to temporarily disable your firewall or anti-virus software in order to determine if this is what is causing the installation issue and to establish connection so you may complete download of any updates. 

NOTE: We highly suggest you contact the anti-virus software company directly or your IT department for assistance with temporarily disabling Anti-Virus/Firewall. 

After you have installed the TaxRight/Laser Link/ACA software program we suggest you Enable the anti-virus/Firewall again and set your (UAC) User Account Control settings back to original setting.

Error (0x8007015e): 

In addition if you receive a (0x8007015e) Error when installing Software, then you will need to Please proceed to do a Full Re-boot of your Computer which is also known as "Hard Reboot" cutting power completely to computer (Full Power Cycle).

Example: 

This Error generates from Microsoft Windows due to possible stuck previous installation and following steps should resolve:

1. Open Windows Task Manager by using shortcut keys Ctrl + Alt + Delete and select Task Manager or type Task Manager in search field located on Windows Task bar and Open Task Manager

2. Select "Processes" tab to end software TaxRight or LaserLink or ACA as well as Windows Installer

3. Re-boot computer system and attempt to install software

Error - (Object reference not set to an instance of an object):

Unhandled Exception The input string" was not in a correct format (W3 Tax Form):

If you receive this error below when entering box 15 State data & saving W3 Transmittal Form in software please close out this error message. You will be able to proceed to Tax Form Printing screen and print W3 as needed with State information. However, you must select State from drop down list under W-3 Information.

Error 10661 - (The Application can't be opened): 

The 10661 Error will generate when using a non software compatible MAC system. It is recommended to use an alternate computer system (Windows PC) if available.

Error 2755 - (Installer Error): 

The 2755 Error when attempting to run Software update will originate from Windows Installer Engine as it cannot read/access file due to insufficient permissions. It is recommended to have your IT Admin and/or Dept review system PC or install software & run software update on alternate Windows PC.
